Overview

Navarre is a small community that surprises visitors with its authenticity and natural, gastronomic and cultural diversity.

Over the few kilometres that separate north and south Navarre you can experience a whole kingdom of natural and cultural diversity which is quite astonishing given the size of the region. Landscapes with marked contrasts, traditions, languages, and a diverse and rich artistic legacy, all of which has been carefully looked after without taking our eyes off the future.

Green and pretty Pamplona is the capital of the great festival of San Fermín. Navarre is the gateway to the Camino de Santiago and land that knows how to enjoy its food; they say the people of the region are kind and live well; you'll learn why on this self-drive holiday to Spain.

Arrive in Barcelona and Drive to Olite

Arrive in the capital of Catalonia, pick a car and drive to Olite. We suggest stopping in Zaragoza. A city with a history stretching back 2,000 years; beautiful Roman ruins, the Aljafería Palace, Mudejar-style churches and the Pilar Basilica are examples of the city's incredible architecture and art. Along the Ebro River, you'll find the San Salvador Cathedral, the region's - Aragon's – most valuable and significant monument where you'll find a beautiful mix of Renaissance and Baroque elements.

Olite and Tafalla

Olite and Tafalla

Olite is a historic-artistic site. Traces of Roman and Gothic art are seen in the medieval court of Carlos III in its castle-palace. It has two medieval churches: Santa María, Gothic, which is partly inside the palace; and San Pedro, the oldest in Olite, with a Romanesque façade and cloister. The main town of Navarre is Tafalla which maintains a mediaeval air in its high part and a modern atmosphere in the centre. Tradition holds that it was founded by the first of the Iberian Peninsula, Túbal.

Urbasa-Andia and the Monastery of Santa Maria Irantzu

The Natural Park of Urbasa-Andía is an area of transition between the mountains and midwestern Navarre. Within the park, there are signposted trails that go past sites that were once used by hunters, shepherds, loggers and coalmen. The Monastery of Iratxe, located in Ayegui is in the heart of the Santiago Way. Hidden inside is a Romanesque church from the 12th century, a plateresque cloister, a Herrera-style tower and other buildings constructed between the 16th and 19th centuries.

The Pilgrim's Route of Santiago de Compostela leads us to Estella. Crossed by the river Ega, Estella has a medieval old town where Roman and Gothic influences are a testimony to its historic splendour. The town has been heavily influenced by the Pilgrim's Route to Santiago de Compostela, with the remains of walls and several religious buildings to be found. Puente La Reina, the Queen's Bridge, is a staging post for travellers on the Pilgrim's route who come from Somport Pass and Roncesvalles.
