Overview

This exciting 13-day itinerary will take you to visit the 8 World Heritage sites that are currently present in Sri Lanka.

On your visit to Sri Lanka, you will discover 3 ancient and magnificent cities of Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Sigiriya were inscribed in the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1982 followed by Galle, Kandy, and the Sinharaja Forest Reserve in 1988.

The Golden Temple of Dambulla in 1991 and finally the Central highlands were added in 2010. These places of historical and natural significance are not to be missed for any visitor to Sri Lanka.

Day 1

Begin your visit to Sri Lanka at Colombo International Airport where a private driver will transfer you to your hotel in Negombo. Once you check in to your hotel you have the rest of the day to spend at your leisure. You can enjoy the sun on the sandy beaches, watch the flourishing fish industry with its centuries-old tradition or partake in some fun water sports. You can also visit the remains of a 17th-century Dutch Fort or the neoclassical St. Mary’s Church.

Day 2

Drive to Habarana and Dambulla Cave

In the morning you will make the journey to Habarana. After arriving, you will visit the historic caves of the Golden Temple of Dambulla, dating back to the 1st century BC. View the ancient murals depicting the life story of Lord Gautama Buddha and see the hundreds of figurines of Buddha and other deities scattered throughout the five main caves. After the visit, you will head to your hotel for an overnight stay.

Climb the 5th century AD rock fortress, Sigiriya, where the King Kasyapa ruled. You will walk through the entrance framed by the paws of a lion that is quite appropriate for its name, Lion Rock. View the beautiful unfading murals that brought Sigiriya its fame and visit and visit the ancient city of Polonnaruwa, which was the second major capital of Sri Lanka. After your tour, you will return back to your hotel to relax.

Today you will visit the ancient ruined city of Anuradhapura, which was the capital for over a millennium until the 10th century AD and has now been listed as a World Heritage Site. You will see the pagodas, monastic buildings and ponds that are scattered all over the vast area. You will also get a chance to visit important landmarks such as Jetavanarama, which was one of the tallest buildings of the ancient world, the Sri Maha Bodhi.

Visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic today, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which was built in the 16th century as the place of veneration and protection for Lord Buddha’s sacred tooth. Walk through the beautifully embellished passageways and elaborately painted halls, displayed in red, cream and black. Lounge against delicately carved pillars and be amazed by the beautiful golden statues. This is an unforgettable experience of history and art.

This morning you will visit a tea factory and plantation where you can see how the world’s famous Ceylon Tea is manufactured. In 1824 a tea plant was brought to Ceylon by the British from China and was planted in the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya for non-commercial purposes. James Taylor was a British citizen who introduced commercial tea plantation in Sri Lanka. After the tea factory, you will make the two-hour journey to Nuwara Eliya.

Today you will visit the beautiful Horton Plains National Park in Ohiya, with its mountain grasslands and lush forests. This protected area is an ideal place for a hike and to spend some time surrounded by nature. After visiting the park, head back to the hotel to relax. You will have the rest of the afternoon free to explore Nuwara Eliya at your leisure, which features a cool climate and quaint British influences from the colonial era.

This morning you have a chance to see blue whales, sperm whales and fin whales as they swim in the waters to the south of Sri Lanka. After lunch, go sightseeing in Galle, where the Portuguese and Dutch made their headquarters. Visit the Galle Fort which is one of the best-preserved fortifications in Asia and view the Maritime Museum, Galle National Museum and the lighthouse. Walk through the cobblestoned streets with their Dutch names as you learn more about their history.

Today you have the day free to enjoy the sun on one of the best beaches in Sri Lanka: Unawatuna Beach. This lovely banana-shaped beach features golden sands, turquoise waters and a relaxed atmosphere. You can enjoy watersports, rent a sun lounger or order a cocktail and a curry from one of the many beachside bars. In the afternoon you can take a stroll up to the pagoda north of the beach and enjoy a beautiful sunset.
