Overview

Take on the scenic journey to end all scenic journeys on this eight-day England trip, travelling from London, through Bath, the Cotswolds, up to the Lake District and down to York, Cambridge and London.

You'll take in key monuments such as Stonehenge and the Roman Baths. You'll take scenic drives through the quaint countryside, stopping to visit the Cotswolds villages of Stow-on-the-Wold and Broadway. You'll journey up to the Lake District, stopping at Chester and Liverpool, two iconic destinations in England.

Moving on, you'll find yourself marvelling at the York Minster and the University of Cambridge before journeying back to London.

Day 1

Journey to Bath from London via Stonehenge & Stourhead Gardens

Start the day early and travel south-west to one of the most important ancient monuments in the world and UNESCO Heritage Site, Stonehenge. The structure is almost 5,000 years old. The journey continues further west to what is considered to be one of England’s finest gardens, Stourhead. One of the most remarkable landscaped gardens in Europe. From here, you'll continue northwards where you encounter the Georgian elegance that is the city of Bath where you'll have a city tour and stay overnight.

Today's route showcases the very best of the Cotswolds. Starting at the “Gateway of the Cotswolds”, Burford, a charming old wool town full of gabled cottages and cobbled streets, you'll then take a slow meandering tour through some of the most beautiful landscape this country has to offer, including The Slaughters, Bourton-on-the-Water and Stow-on-the-Wold for lunch at a fine country tavern. After lunch, you'll tour Broadway and have time for afternoon tea before reaching your hotel.

Today, you'll start the day with a visit to Blenheim Palace. The size and scale of the palace is truly remarkable. You'll stop in the nearby village of Woodstock for lunch before your day continues in the heart of the historic city of Oxford. The home of English education for over 800 years. You'll tour the most beautiful of the 38 colleges that make up the University. You'll v visit discreet gardens, ancient dining halls and chapels.

Today, you'll head north through the English Midlands to the north-west. You'll stop in the Roman city of Chester, established as a Roman fortress in the 1st century and famous for its almost complete city walls. A short drive brings you to Liverpool, one of the UK's key trade and migration ports from the 18th to 20th centuries and famous as the hometown of the Beatles. Leaving Liverpool, your journey takes you north into the beautiful Lake District, for your stay near Lake Windermere.

Today, you'll enjoy a day touring the Lake District, England's largest national park and World Heritage Site. The scenery abounds with glacial ribbon lakes and rugged fell mountains. Your tour will take you to Windermere, Ullswater, and Grasmere. At Coniston Water, you'll enjoy a relaxing cruise on the Victorian Steam Yacht Gondola, restored and operated by the National Trust. You'll then say farewell and venture across the country into Yorkshire and across the Yorkshire Dales.

Founded by the Romans in 71 AD, York became the capital city of the Anglo Saxons, and later, the Vikings. Today, you can walk along stretches of the medical walls and tour York Minster, one of the world’s most magnificent places, the largest Gothic cathedral in Northern Europe. In the afternoon, you'll visit Castle Howard, another impressive example of an English stately home. You'll then return to York and take an evening stroll through the medieval leaning buildings, known as the 'Shambles'.

Today your England trip turns southwards. Close to York, nestled in a wooded valley stands the awe-inspiring ruins of Fountains Abbey, built in the 12th century. You'll then travel further south into Derbyshire and to Chatsworth House. You'll explore over 30 rooms in the house including the Painted Hall, State Rooms, Sculpture Gallery and discover its art, history and family. Leaving the north of England, you'll journey into East Anglia and the ancient University City of Cambridge.
