Overview
Wine and cava are a part of Catalan history. Each glass preserves a small piece of the past, which is why wine tourism in Catalonia is about much more than wine tasting. On this Catalonia wine tour, you'll discover the land of contrasts; one being the agricultural landscape of Priorat where the elevated terrain in terraced llicorella soil requires the planting of small plots which gives the wine that unique taste.
Another being the vineyards by the sea that are twisted by the winds of the Empordà DO where grapes are grown at 1,000 metres altitude on the Vi de Lleida route, and also the vineyards of Bages, which are protected by the bulk of Montserrat Mountains.
On this tour, you'll discover the varied landscape and Catalan cultural heritage through a selection of more than 300 wineries that will open their doors to you. You'll cover two of the twelve wine designations of origin throughout Catalan including one cava Designation of Origin.

Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Barcelona

Upon arrival at Barcelona Airport, you will pick up the car at the rental office and then drive to the hotel in Barcelona city centre. Once checked in, you'll have time to explore this wonderful city soaked in rich history and stunning architecture. Architects such as Gaudí, Doménech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch have left their mark on Barcelona with outstanding buildings such as the Sagrada Familia, the Roman Catholic church that is still being finsihed over 130 years later.

Start Your Catalonia Wine Tour

Today you'll leave this cosmopolitan city behind on your drive Catalonia wine tour. En route to your next destination of Figueres, you'll stop in the Emporda wine region, where you'll visit the stunning d'Olivardots estate. After exploring the vineyard, you'll continue towards Figueres, the famous hometown of Salvador Dali. Once checked in you'll have time to explore this beautiful town and visit the Dali Museum home to the largest collection of the artist's work.

Figueres to Girona

Today, you'll leave Figueres after breakfast and head towards the ancient Catalan city of Girona stopping en route to visit another Emporda winery. At the Bodega Castell de Perelada, you'll witness wine production that dates back to the middle ages combining tradition with modern technology. Once you reach Girona, you'll have time to explore this large city that is home to one of the largest and best preserved old towns in the whole of Europe.

Day 4
Penedes Wine Region

Today, you'll leave Girona and cross into the Penedes wine region. Your first stop will be the Albet i Noya vineyard that has been producing wines since 1978. Here, you'll have a chance to visit the cellar, the vineyard, learn about organic wine production and even sample some of their delicious wines. Once you arrive in Vilafranca del Penedes, not far from Barcelona, you'll visit the Familia Torres and the family that has dedicated over 140 years to wine production in the Penedes.

After breakfast, it will be time to say goodbye to your Catalan wine adventure. From Vilafranca del Penedes, you'll make the 60-kilometre drive to Barcelona airport where you will return your rental car and continue your onward journey to your next destination.
