Overview

Designed for lovers of nature and adventure, this trek to the base camp of the world’s tenth highest peak, Mt. Annapurna 1, features breathtaking views of the mountains as well as picturesque Buddhist villages.

Often cited as Annapurna Sanctuary, Annapurna Base Camp is a natural amphitheatre opening to a 360-degree view of the Annapurna Range and several other majestic Himalayan peaks. The Himalayas and its unique trail take you through forests of bamboo, oak and rhododendron as well as monasteries, lakes and rivers.

From Pokhara, you will drive for an hour to the starting point of the trek in Nayapul. You'll also finish here.

Day 1

Arrival in Kathmandu

When you arrive in Nepal, you will be collected from the airport and taken to your hotel in Kathmandu city centre. You'll have the rest of the day to explore, see the sights and meet your guide for your tour briefing. That night, enjoy a welcome dinner with your hosts.

Visit two of the World Heritage sites in Kathmandu. Pashupatinath houses a sacred lingam or the phallic symbol of Lord Shiva, and the Buddhists shrine of Boudhanath is one of the largest stupas in the world. Kathmandu Durbar Square and Swayambhu meaning the "the self-existent" is popular among travellers as is the Monkey Temple owing to a large number of monkey population residing in the area.

Day 3

Drive to Pokhara

We leave for Pokhara after breakfast. The drive to Pokhara takes around 6-7 hours and is a very scenic one, so sit back and relax. Alternatively, it is possible to do a 30-minute scenic flight at an additional cost. The afternoon is free at leisure for you to explore Pokhara on your own. You can take a leisurely walk around Phewa Lake or even take a boat tour.

Day 4

Drive to Nayapul and start on the trek to Ulleri, traversing Birethanthi and Modi River on suspension bridges, entering into the Annapurna Conservation Area. Today, we will climb about 3,000 steps to reach the lodge at Ulleri where you'll have your first view of the mountains.

Resume trekking right after breakfast. Annapurna South and Hiunchuli peaks are visible if the weather is clear. Our trail gradually ascends and traverses dense forests of rhododendron and oak, and the villages of Banthanti and Nangethani. Spend the night in a lodge in upper Ghorepani village, near the ridge where we have beautiful panoramic views of the Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges.

Day 6

Wake up early and hike by torchlight and warm clothes for about 1.5 hours to Poon Hill (3,210 metres), the best spot to see panoramic views of Dhaulagiri and Annapurna ranges at sunrise. Descend to the lodge for breakfast and resume trekking to Tadapani (2,650 metres), where you can see Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre peaks.

Today, we go downhill for 2 hours, cross a small stream and then gradually climb to the Gurung settlement of Gurung. From here, you'll see the Annapurna ranges including the snow-covered Fishtail Peak. After reaching Chhomrong, we will relax for the rest of the day and visit Chhomrong, a bigger settlement.

After enjoying the view at Chomrong of sunrise and breakfast, we resume trekking to Himalaya Hotel via Bamboo and Dovan. The trail passes through a deep gorge and along the banks of the Modi River before you reaching your steepest ascent of the day. You may spot some wildlife including monkeys and Himalayan goats en route.

Resume trekking after an early breakfast and head towards our final destination Annapurna Base Camp (ABC). You will be overwhelmed by the beauty of snow-capped mountains all around you. In the afternoon, go for a closer view of Annapurna I (8091m), Annapurna Glacier, Annapurna South (7200m), Hiunchuli (6444m), Machhapuchhre (6793m) and Annapurna III.

Wake up early in the morning to enjoy the magnificent view at sunrise. Take photos while the sun's rays hit the Himalayas. Then have breakfast and start descending to Bamboo, losing about 2000 metres in altitude in just 6-7 hours. Today, your surroundings will go from snow to dense rhododendron forests.

Leaving Bamboo behind, climb steps for 30 minutes to reach the village of Khuldighar. The trail then ascends to a plateau, then goes downhill again until you reach Sinuwa and cross Chhomrong River. Ascend once again to Chhomrong village before you start a 1-hour descent all the way to the village of Jhinu. Stop at the lodge and go for a refreshing bath in the nearby hot spring.

Today is the last day of our ABC trek. Leaving Jhinu, we first descend, cross the river and continue along the trail that remains almost flat all the way to Birethanti and head to Nayapul. As we get closer to civilisation, you'll see the vegetation becomes lower as the city appears in the distance. Drive back to Pokhara and rest after your adventure - a comfortable bed awaits!

Return to Kathmandu

You can either drive back to Kathmandu by bus or alternatively, take a 30-minute flight at an additional cost. You'll arrive late afternoon and have time to relax, take a walk through the streets of Thamel, and do some shopping. Celebrate your successful journey to Annapurna Sanctuary with a farewell dinner in Kathmandu.
